Dr. Timothy J. Shaffer is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Chair of Civil Discourse and Director of the SNF Ithaca Initiative in the Joseph R. Biden, Jr. School of Public Policy and Administration at the University of Delaware. Shaffer is the author or co-editor of seven books including "Deliberative Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning for Democratic Engagement", "Creating Space for Democracy: A Primer on Dialogue and Deliberation in Higher Education", with the latest one being "Teaching Public Affairs Students to Serve With the People: Findings and Reflections from Diverse Course Designs" from Routledge. He earned his PhD from Cornell University.       

Where is that line [between citizenship and journalism]? It is that sense of professional expectations of what it means to be a journalist. But I would almost flip it; how much do journalists think of themselves as citizens? How do we enable or support professionals to see themselves in a civic way?
