Christopher Pissarides

Born in Nicosia, Cyprus in 1948. Sir Christopher Pissarides is Regius Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics, Professor of European Studies at the University of Cyprus and President of the Council of National Economy of Cyprus.

He specializes in labour market economics, macroeconomic policy, economic growth and structural change. In 2005, Mr. Pissarides became the first economist outside the US to win, together with Dale Mortensen, from Northwestern University, the presitigious International Labour Institute award (IZA) in Labour Economics. In 2010, he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, jointly with Peter Diamond from MIT and Dale Mortensen for their work on the economics of unemployment, especially job flows and the effects of being out of work. In 2011, he was awarded with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III of the Republic of Cyprus and in 2013 he became Knight of the British Crown. He has written in scientific journals and in the press, and his book "Equilibrium Unemployment Theory" is a reference point in unemployment economics and has been translated into many languages.

He is a member of the Econometric Society, the British Academy, the Academy of Europe, a frequent member of the Academy of Athens since 2016 as well as honorary member of the American Economic Association.
